HCA Florida Englewood Hospital Awarded 22nd Straight ‘A’ for Hospital Safety from Leapfrog Group
Grade reflects top national performance on patient safety through COVID-19 pandemic

ENGLEWOOD, Fla - (May 3, 2023) – HCA Florida Englewood Hospital is only one of two hospitals in the state of Florida to have received 22 straight “A’s” for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. This national distinction celebrates Englewood Hospital’s achievements in prioritizing patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors. The new grades reflect performance primarily during the height of the pandemic.

“Achieving 22 straight A’s for patient safety reflects the work of our physicians and caregivers who show up for our patients with exceptional care every day. Patient safety is at the heart of our commitment to providing high-quality care. We foster a culture of safety by involving every member of our care teams and leveraging technology to help us provide a secure environment for our patients and colleagues,” said Steve Young, Chief Executive Officer. “From our more than 40,000 annual patient encounters, we develop and share best practices across our hospital that help continuously improve patient care, using evidence-based guidance, tools, measurement, advanced analytics and data science to support safe, effective, compassionate care. Additionally, we invest in the development of our caregivers to ensure the overall well-being and skills of our colleagues.”

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

“This new update of Hospital Safety Grades shows that, at the national level, we saw deterioration in patient safety with the pandemic,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “But this hospital received an ‘A’ despite those challenges. I congratulate all the leaders, staff, volunteers and clinicians who together made that possible.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
