ENGLEWOOD, Fla. October 30, 2023 – Many families can only dream of is a space to feel welcome and safe. A backyard for children to play in. A new beginning. A place to call home.
 
HCA Florida Englewood Hospital CEO Joe Rudisill and a team of women caregivers donned hard hats, gloves and swung hammers to help build a single-family home for a family in North Port during Women Build Week. The event hosted by Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County is a unique opportunity for women to get on the construction site and learn new skills while helping to address our community’s affordable housing crisis.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to become a homeowner. My family will celebrate holidays and birthdays here for many years.” said future homeowner, Yamila. “This teaches my children that anything is possible if you work hard and don’t give up.”

Englewood Hospital also presented a check for $5,000 to Habitat for Humanity of South Sarasota County to support their efforts to build a stronger, safer community. The nonprofit housing organization helps build or renovate safe, affordable, energy-efficient homes for those in need in south Sarasota County. Habitat educates homeowners so that they may succeed in home ownership and pass their newly acquired knowledge on to the next generation. 
 
Nurse leader Melissa Clifford shared, “Today, I had a chance to install windows for this family, and it was a lot of fun. Building a house may not require nurse-specific skills, but it does include many of the same qualities that our nurses use to care for our patients every day – teamwork, empathy, the ability to multi-task and an understanding of the basic physiological needs like shelter.”

The group installed windows, doors and furring strips for the 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom home. The future homeowner worked alongside the team of volunteers, helping her along the path to homeownership.

“As part of Florida’s leading healthcare network, we work to give people healthier tomorrows both in our hospital and the community. We know that healthy living begins with having affordable shelter where families can gather, grow and call home,” said Rudisill. “It is truly inspiring to witness community members and colleagues showing up together to make someone’s dream of owning a home a reality.”
